Why Waterproofing Matters More Than Ever
Why Waterproofing Matters More Than Ever

Not all waterproof LED strip lights are created equal. While many suppliers offer IP65 by default, the real waterproofing quality varies greatly depending on materials, structure, and workmanship.
Poor waterproofing leads to yellowing, cracking, flickering, and even safety risks, especially in outdoor and high-humidity installations.
At Sunro, we take waterproofing seriously. Every LED strip we design undergoes material testing, process optimization, and IP-level certification. Our Outdoor LED strip lights don’t just survive—they perform continuously, even in the most unforgiving conditions
Understanding IP Ratings for LED Strip Lights
Understanding IP Ratings for LED Strip Lights
IP ratings measure how well an LED strip is protected from dust, moisture, and water. This is a big deal if they are to be used in or around an area that doesn’t stay dry.
| IP Rating | Features | Application |
|---|---|---|
| IP20 Rating | No water protection. | Good for dry space, indoor only |
| IP40 Rating | Protected against splashes. | Can be used in bathrooms or near sinks, but not where water is likely to hit directly. |
| IP54 Rating | Slightly better water resistance. | Handles humidity or occasional spray, but not for outdoor use. |
| IP65 Rating | Fully dustproof and Jet/splash-proof, not submersible | Kitchen, Bathroom, or moisture areas |
| IP67 Rating | Can handle being temporarily submerged in water (up to 1 meter deep for a short time). | Patios, eaves, and areas with heavy rain |
| IP68 Rating | Made for continuous submersion | Pools, fountains, aquariums, Boat decks, or any installation that stays wet all the time. |
Choosing the right IP rating is the first step toward a reliable, long-lasting waterproof LED lighting solution tailored to your project needs.

Waterproof Materials for LED Strip: Which One Should You Choose?
Waterproof Materials for LED Strip: Which One Should you Choose?
Choosing the right waterproofing material is just as important as selecting the right IP rating, because the material directly affects durability, flexibility, and visual performance in different environments. The main material options for waterproof LED strip lights include:
PVC: It is the most budget-friendly option. While it’s commonly used in entry-level waterproof strips, its downsides include lower transparency, a tendency to yellow over time, and relatively poor waterproofing. It’s generally not recommended for long-term or high-moisture applications.
Epoxy resin glue: Economical option. It’s easy to apply and works for basic indoor needs, but it tends to yellow or crack after long exposure to UV or heat, and has limited temperature resistance. Over time, it may become brittle, especially in outdoor or high-heat environments.
Silicone glue: it offers Strong UV resistance, excellent waterproof performance, and good thermal conductivity. It also remains stable and flexible over time, making it ideal for long-term outdoor or demanding applications.
PU (polyurethane) glue: it provides a strong balance of flexibility, weatherability, and price. Better hand feeling than Silicone, Softer than epoxy, better for curved surfaces. It also has better resistance to yellowing, acids, and chemicals, ideal in outdoor and marine conditions.
| Materials | Silicone | PU Glue | Epoxy Resin | PVC |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Flexibility | Outstanding | Excellent | Good | Poor |
| Max Temperature Resistance | 200–300°C | 90–120°C | 65–315°C | 60–93°C (some higher) |
| Chemical Resistance | Excellent, resists many chemicals | Excellent resists many solvents and mild acids/bases | Excellent, resists solvents, acids, bases, and water | Good to aqueous & mild chemicals; some solvents degrade |
| UV Resistance | Excellent | Good, but can yellow with UV exposure | Moderate, can yellow or chalk over time | Moderate, may degrade/yellow with exposure |
| Waterproof | Yes, and remains so after curing | Yes, suitable for outdoor/marine use | Yes | Yes, form a watertight seal in PVC joints |
| Cost | High | High | Cost-effective | Economy |

Waterproof LED Strip Lights FAQ
Waterproof LED Strip Lights FAQ
The ideal waterproof LED strip light for outdoor use should offer at least an IP67 rating, be UV-resistant, and be made with high-durability silicone or PU extrusion. At Sunroleds, we offer multiple waterproofing technologies, such as silicone extrusion, that ensure excellent performance in rain, snow, heat, or humidity. Whether for gardens, facades, signage, or decks, our Outdoor waterproof LED strips or Outdoor Neon LED Strip Lights are built to last.
Lifespan varies depending on materials, manufacturing, and working environment, but high-quality waterproof LED strips typically last 30,000 to 50,000 hours. We ensure durability through UV-resistant materials, thermal stability, and multi-layer waterproofing processes.
Absolutely. Our waterproof LED strips are tested for high humidity and elevated temperature, making them suitable for steam showers, saunas, and wellness areas. We recommend the Specialty Sauna LED Strip for Sauna Room, which can withstand up to 100 °C high temperature
For areas with deep moisture, IP67 Waterproof is usually sufficient. For direct water contact or submersion, use IP68 Waterproof. Our team helps you choose the right level based on your project conditions.
All LEDs generate some heat, but our waterproof LED Light strips are engineered with efficient thermal management. Silicone and PU coatings help dissipate heat, making them safe for continuous use even in enclosed or high-temperature spaces.
It depends entirely on your application and environment:
For outdoor installations exposed to sunlight, silicone is the better choice. It offers superior UV resistance and maintains clarity and flexibility over time. In contrast, PU (polyurethane) can yellow under prolonged UV exposure, making it less suitable for outdoor use.
For high-pressure or industrial environments, PU performs better. It provides strong chemical resistance, mechanical durability, and higher resilience under stress or vibration—ideal for heavy-duty applications.
For indoor projects, some designers prefer PU for its smooth texture and more refined appearance, giving the lighting a sleek, high-end finish. It also feels softer to the touch compared to silicone.
At Sunroleds, we offer 16 different waterproofing techniques using both silicone and PU materials, allowing us to match the right solution to your project’s performance, aesthetic, and environmental requirements.
